We are dedicated to ensuring that content, including films, games and publications, is classified and distributed responsibly.
The Film and Publications Board (FPB) is a regulatory body in South Africa responsible for classifying films, games, and certain publication for public distributor. Our mandate has been expanded to include regulating online content, in addition to physical content, with the aim of protecting children and vulnerable citizens.
The Film and Publications Amendment (Act.11 of 2019) came into operation on 1 March 2022, and the FPB has been granted legitimate powers to issue and grant licenses and enforce prescribed regulations, by imposing penalties for non-compliance with the law and the requisite regulations.
Our primary role is to examine and rate content to ensure that it complies with national legislation and is suitable for different age groups. The FPB evaluates content based on its potential harm or suitability for different audiences, assigning age-based classification such as “PG”(Parental Guidance),”16,”18” and “X18” to restrict access to age-inappropriate material. Additionally, it aims to protect children from exposure to harmful or explicit content.
